JOHNSONVILLE -- Jessica Ard Harrelson, librarian at Johnsonville Elementary School, has been named “Teacher of The Year” for Florence County District Five Schools.
District officials broke protocol this year and instead of making the announcement at the first meeting of all school personnel at the beginning of the 2010-11 school year, they decided to make the announcement at the last meeting of the JES faculty and staff before the summer break.
Harrelson was named “Teacher of the Year” for Johnsonville Elementary School earlier this school year.
The daughter of Tommie Ann and Johnny Ard, Jessica is a 1988 graduate of Pleasant Hill High School. She received a Bachelor of Science from Francis Marion University in 1992 and a Masters in Library Information Services (MLIS) from the University of South Carolina in 1996. She has worked in a number of area schools including Pleasant Hill Elementary Kindergarten. She has designed reading programs especially for her K-4 students and enjoys working with them. They are responsible for the morning video (news) show and numerous other programs.
Randy Smiley, assistant superintendent for Florence County District Five, in congratulating Jessica talked about her importance to the school and the work she does for the young students who come under her care.
Jessica said, “I especially enjoy working with Mrs. (Dayne) Coker, JES principal. She was my babysitter when I was little and that has carried over to a special relationship.”
Jessica is married to Eddie Harrelson and they have a 13-year-old daughter, Connor, who is a student in District Five.
