CHESTERFIELD — A Chesterfield County sheriff's deputy was suspended this month for hitting a suspect at the Chesterfield County Detention Center.
It happened two weeks ago when the deputy lost control of a suspect he had arrested for disorderly conduct, being a minor in possession of alcohol and resisting arrest, Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker said.
The two got into a heated verbal dispute in the booking area and the suspect made a sexual comment about the deputy’s daughter, Parker said. That’s when the deputy hit the suspect.
The suspect began to complain that he wasn’t able to breathe and was taken to a local hospital. After being released, he was taken to another doctor by his family who said he had suffered a broken nose, Parker said.
The deputy was suspended for three days without pay, the sheriff said.
Neither the deputy nor the suspect were identified.
Parker said he met with the suspect’s family and told them if they wanted another agency to investigate the incident, he could get one, but the family decided not to pursue the incident.
The exchange between the suspect and the deputy was caught on video, Parker said, and it’s clear both were out of control.
The deputy is back on the job after his suspension, the sheriff said.
