FLORENCE — A Florence man has been arrested on weapons charges in connection with a shooting at a Florence nightclub where a fatal shooting happened late last month.
Delbert Garland Jr., 23 of 408 Prout Drive, Apt. B, is charged with discharging a firearm into a dwelling, unlawful carrying of a pistol and unlawful possession of a handgun, Florence County Detention Center booking reports show.
Garland is charged in connection with a shooting Sunday night at Seekers on South Irby Street, according to a Florence County Sheriff’s Office press release.
Deputies were called to the club in response to a report of shots fired in the parking lot. Investigators said the suspect was involved in an argument earlier that night with another patron in the club, and both were ejected, according to the release.
Investigators believe the suspect obtained the handgun from his vehicle and fired in the direction of patrons and a club employee in the parking lot. The serial number on the handgun had been removed or obliterated, according to the release.
Gilbert was released from the jail in Effingham on Tuesday on a $15,000 surety bond.
Early the morning of May 28, a fight escalated into a shootout in the Seekers parking lot ended with a Marion man, 20-year-old Deangelo Foxworth, killed by a Florence County sheriff’s deputy and a club security guard wounded. The owners of Seekers then closed the club until May 31.
Sheriff Kenney Boone, at a press conference May 31, said he would like to see the club closed permanently as a public nuisance, in much the way a club in the Savannah Grove community was closed earlier this year.
In that case, a judge ruled earlier in May that KT’s Lounge, or KT’s Place on Ed James Road in Effingham, be leveled within 30 days. A mobile home, the residence of the club’s owners, was ordered moved or it too would be subject to destruction, according to a ruling issued by Circuit Court Judge Thomas A. Russo.
The sheriff’s office has asked the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate, as is the procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
The deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave and is receiving counseling, Boone said at the press conference.
