MYRTLE BEACH – On Tuesday, June 1, 2010 News 13’s 10pm and 11pm anchor, Wendi Redman, participated in a Pickleball demonstration along with other local media personalities.
The City of Myrtle Beach and Pepper Geddings Recreation Center hosted the demonstration.
In honor of National Pickleball Week, the City of Myrtle Beach introduced the new court sport to local media.
Fun for all ages, Pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity. “We have regular players at our recreation centers, and Rena Grant, one of our local stars, is even a Pickleball Ambassador,” states City of Myrtle Beach Public Information Officer, Mark Kruea. “Pickleball is easy for beginners to learn, suitable for a variety of ages and fitness levels and, with practice, can develop into a fast-paced competitive game”.
Pickleball was invented during the summer of 1965 by three men who lived on a small island very close to Seattle, Washington.
Joel Pritchard, a USA congressman at the time, William Bell, and Barney McCallum were looking for a sport the whole family could play.
That’s when they created Pickleball. The game was named after Joel Pritchard’s dog named “Pickles”.
Pickles became interested in the new game and would disappear with loose balls.
Redman caught on quickly during the demonstration, playing doubles with WPDE’s Ed Piotrowski against the City of Myrtle Beach’s Mark Kruea and Pam Stone.
For more information about Pickleball and how to play, contact Rena Grant of the USA Pickleball Association at (843) 294-2315 or visit www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com.
