COLUMBIA -- David Michael Childers, 45, of Myrtle Beach, was sentenced today in federal court in Florence, for possession of child pornography, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2252(a)(5)(B), according to a press release from United States Attorney William N. Nettles.
United States District Judge R. Bryan Harwell of Florence sentenced Childers to 42 months imprisonment and three years supervised release, during which he is required to undergo sex offender treatment and submit to random polygraphs. Childers is also prohibited from any access to computers without approval from the United States Probation Office and is required to register as a sex offender.
Evidence presented at the guilty plea hearing established that Childers was discovered during an undercover operation being conducted by the FBI, in Springfield, Ill. FBI agents went online in June 2008 using the identification of a known child pornographer and terms known to be used by child pornographers. The agents went on a publicly available program which allows “peer to peer” sharing of material when they discovered that Childers was offering to share child pornography. Agents downloaded the child pornography being offered by Childers and his computers were subsequently seized. A search of Childers’ computers revealed that they contained child pornography.
The case was investigated by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney William E. Day II of the Florence office handled the case.
