FLORENCE — A Salters tax preparer has been sentenced to six months in prison for assisting in the preparation of false federal income tax returns by supplying individuals with fraudulent W-2 forms to be used to obtain refunds, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney William N. Nettles. U.S. District Judge R. Bryan Harwell also sentenced 46-year-old Jerlene E. McKnight to a year of supervised release with nine months home detention with electronic monitoring, and a fine of $5,000. She faced a $100,000 fine and three years in prison, as well as an order to pay restitution. McKnight admitted she prepared false W-2 forms, which she sold to people so they could file tax returns and obtain refunds. The W-2 forms were in the name of two fictitious businesses. Most of the taxpayers took the fictitious W-2 forms to Vincenia Brockington, a tax preparer who has already been convicted of tax fraud. McKnight sold at least 35 false W-2 forms, which were used to justify tax refunds, resulting in losses to the United States of about $130,000. Assistant U.S. Attorney William E. Day II of the Florence office prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation.
