Horry County communities say abandoned boats growing problem

»  Comments | Post a Comment

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Coastal South Carolina communities say the bad economy is adding to the problem of abandoned boats clogging up the state's waterways.

240 abandoned boats have been reported in the state's coastal waterways in the past few years.

More than half those had no owner and were so damaged they could not be salvaged.

Rob Barton runs charters through the Intracoastal Waterway and into the ocean.

He helped move part of a dredge that was left in the waterway earlier this year.

That required that the boat be pumped out, hazardous materials removed then the boat was sunk as part of an artificial reef near Little River.

Barton says he thinks the economy is making it more difficult
for people to afford docking fees and repairs.
