MYRTLE BEACH -- A 10-year-old boy is recovering from what appears to be a shark bite he got while in the ocean Monday morning.

The emergency call was made about 10:40 a.m., for an incident that happened in the water at 69th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach. An ambulance took the child from the scene about 11:00 a.m.

Myrtle Beach Beach Patrol would not initially confirm if the injury was from a shark, referring to it as an "aquatic accident." Doctors examined the boy at an area hospital and sent pictures of the injury to an expert for review.

The expert said it appears a small shark did bite the boy. It could have been a black tip, or fish-eating, shark.

For a brief period of time after the incident, authorities cleared the water near where the bite occurred and did not let anyone in it. By early afternoon, activity resumed as normal in the area.

The boy, who was visiting the beach with his family from Gettysburg, PA, is expected to be okay.
