CONWAY -- A South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Corporal has been fired after being arrested on drug charges.
Lance Cpl. Bobby Lee Spurgeon was arrested Friday night, Capt. Scott Rutherford, Horry County Police Department, said.
According to a press release, Spurgeon was arrested after an eight month joint narcotics investigation involving the Horry County Police Department, South Carolina Department of Public Safety and the SLED.
An investigation was initiated in December of 2009 into Spurgeon after receiving information of allegations of illegal drug activity. During the investigation, surveillance was conducted on Spurgeon while on and off duty.
Spurgeon was seen purchasing approximately 3.5 grams of a white powdery substance at a bar in Myrtle Beach on Friday and was then taken into custody. A field test was conducted and the powdery substance tested positive for cocaine.
Spurgeon was off duty at the time of his arrest.
Spurgeon is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and is currently out of jail on bond, according to a press release.
Bail was set at $10,000, according to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center website.
Authorities said a joint investigation between the Horry County Police Department and South Carolina Highway Patrol is ongoing and that no further information could be released for fear of “compromising the ongoing investigation.”
