Florence funeral home director killed in motorcycle crash

FLORENCE — A prominent Florence businessman died Saturday morning when the motorcycle he was taking a training class on, crashed.

James Lawrence Smith, 55, was taking a motorcycle training course at Florence-Darlington Technical College when he lost control of the bike and was thrown from it, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.

Smith was funeral director at Smith Funeral Home in Florence and was regional director for the United Negro College Fund’s annual fundraising gala – a post he’d had for more than 15 years.

Florence County Coroner MG “Bubba” Matthews said he received a call from a state trooper informing him of Smith’s death.

Matthews said the bike belonged to the college and Smith was wearing a helmet.

Collins said the highway patrol normally doesn’t handle crashes that occur on private property and they are in the process of determining who will continue the investigation.
