COLUMBIA -- Millions of people turn to the internet everyday for information, to pay bills and just about everything else. With the ever-growing use, the threat of identity theft continues to grow.
Privacy online, however, is basically an oxymoron. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs offers some ideas to help you protect yourself.
-Know where you're sending your information online. Make sure sites are privacy protected and don't share personal information on social media sites.
-Keep virus and spyware protection up-to-date. Viruses and spyware masquerade as something normal, but they can collect your data and send it to an unauthorized user.
-Never respond to pop-ups asking for personal info. Scammers constantly phish for information. Valid websites will not send emails requesting personal data.
-Tell your children not to answer emails or provide information. Keep parental control on your computer.
