MARION -- Marion County is reported to have the second highest unemployment rate in December at 22.6 percent, which is an increase from 21.2 percent in November.
According to the Employment Security Commission press release, South Carolina’s unemployment rate rose in December to a record 12.6 percent, up from November’s 12.3 percent rate.
The commission noted December’s labor force figures were the lowest since September 2008.
The commission reported that the state’s overall job count was 38,100 below the year-ago level and nearly 109,900 below the December 2007 level when the recent recession began.
The biggest job losses came in leisure and hospitality business as they employed 5,200 fewer people. Manufacturers lost 800 jobs.
