Republicans in Florence have a new way to show their support for the party and its elected officials through a Republican women’s club, the first of its kind in the county.
The Florence County Republican Women’s Club will hold its inaugural meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Florence Country Club.
Many Republican politicians and their families are expected to be out in full force to show their support at the event, said Stephanie Rawlinson, acting president of the women’s club.
Supporters have been working for more than a year to get the organization started after many realized a county the size of Florence needed such a group, said Dana Shriver, who worked to organize the club.
Club members fervently support the local Republican party and current elected Republican officials, Shriver said.
The newly-formed club also supports women who may want to run for an elected office, Rawlinson said. There are no Republican women in the state Senate and very few in the state House of Representatives.
“There are no female republican elected officials in Florence County,” she said. “There are dynamic women in Florence County and we want to educate and help them to learn.
Women from Florence or another county are welcome to join the group, Shriver said. Even men are welcome to join as associate members, both Rawlinson and Shriver said.
State Rep. Philip Lowe is the first associate member of the Florence County Republican Women’s Club and formally announced the group’s formation in December, Shriver said.
“It’s very exhilarating to get the men to be behind us,” she said. “We hope that other counties will follow suit and form other groups.”
Thursday’s meeting is sponsored by Ken Ard for Lieutenant Governor. Ard serves as a member of Florence County Council.
Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone is scheduled to speak at the event, along with Lowe and Johnsonville City Councilman Brad Richardson, Shriver said.
The group has already scheduled two fundraisers, she said. A portion of the proceeds will benefit three local charities.
The group meets the third Thursday of every month.
