McLeod center offers diabetes prevention class

»  Comments | Post a Comment

FLORENCE – The McLeod Diabetes Center announced last week a pre-diabetes and diabetes prevention class, scheduled for Jan 20, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. at the McLeod Diabetes Center in McLeod Medical Park East, Suite 250. (McLeod Medical Park East, adjacent to the McLeod Pavilion, is at 901 East Cheves Street, Florence).

A release explained that pre-diabetes is not diabetes but rather a precursor to the condition indicating insulin resistance. Pre-diabetes increases one's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, the release said. With intervention, including education and lifestyle changes, pre-diabetes patients can lower their blood glucose levels, prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes, and decrease their risk of cardiovascular disease.

The class is taught by a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), and will teach pre-diabetes patients effective lifestyle changes that can prevent them from developing diabetes. Persons interested in the class can call McLeod Reservations and Scheduling at (843) 777-2095 (no physician referral is required). The cost of the course is $20 for the patient and $5 for one supporting family member or caregiver who would also like to attend.

The McLeod Diabetes Center offers state-of-the-art care for people with diabetes. The Diabetes Center is staffed by three Certified Diabetes Educators who work with patients to help them self-manage their diabetes, prevent or lessen diabetes complications, and reduce the side effects of diabetes, all improving quality of life.

The Diabetes Center offers an extensive range of inpatient and outpatient services including diabetes self-management education, individual and group education classes, nutritional counseling and carbohydrate counting education, and exercise and weight management. The Center also offers education in diabetes foot care, insulin self-administration and insulin pump training, training in home glucose monitoring, and stress and time management.

The McLeod Diabetes Center has been recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and the American Diabetes Association for their diabetes self-management education. For more information, please call (843) 777-6000 or visit www.McLeodDiabetes.org.
