A new Florence County Library System incentive program is enticing children to spend more time reading books from their local libraries this spring.
The Read to Ride contest is set to begin Feb. 1 and is open to children ages 3 to 17, said Paula Childers, manager of children’s services for the library system.
Children can enter the contest for a chance to win new bicycles, she said.
The contest is sponsored by Toys for Tots, the Marine Corps League and the Friends of the Florence County Library with the purpose of getting families in Florence County to visit the library and read more, Childers said.
“It will help promote family literacy. So they will have an incentive to come to the library and check out materials,” she said. “Reading is in every concept of your life.”
Childers said it is important for the community to know how important libraries are to life and learning.
All six libraries in the county are participating in the program, so families can check out materials anywhere in the county.
If a child doesn’t already have a library card, the parent can obtain one by visiting the local library and presenting their driver’s license.
If the child isn’t present, the parent must bring a copy of a birth certificate.
Library officials said they hope the program will encourage parents and older family members to read more, Childers said.
If parents and grandparents are avid readers, more than likely, the children in that family group will have an interest in reading.
Childers said she encourages families to start reading to their children at a very early age.
The library offers a baby story time program, as well as programs for tweens, teens and parents.
Read to Ride will conclude April 2 and winners will be announced during a special program at 3:30 p.m. April 14 during National Library Week, Childers said.
