Lumberton police are investigating the shooting death of 21-year-old Willie James Stanford, Jr. after the authorities tracked the murder suspect to a home there Thursday afternoon.
Robeson County sheriff's deputies say Stanford killed 19-year-old Austin Hunt early Sunday morning at a home on Deep Branch Road near Maxton.
According to Lumberton Police Lt. Johnny Barnes, on Thursday, U.S. Marshall's deputies knocked on the door of a home on South Chestnut Street. As a woman answered the door, officers say they heard a gunshot from somewhere in the home, and when they entered, they found Stanford with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation continues.
