FLORENCE — The McLeod Diabetes Center is offering a pre-diabetes and diabetes prevention class Wednesday.
It will be from 4:15 to 6:30 p.m. in McLeod Medical Park East, Suite 250, 901 E. Cheves St., Florence. The class will be taught by a Certified Diabetes Educator and will teach pre-diabetes patients effective lifestyle changes that can prevent them from developing diabetes.
Pre-diabetes is not diabetes, but a precursor to the condition indicating insulin resistance. Pre-diabetes increases one’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. With intervention, including education and lifestyle changes, pre-diabetes patients can lower their blood glucose levels, prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes, and decrease their risk of cardiovascular disease.
Those interested in the class can call McLeod Reservations and Scheduling at (843) 777-2095. No physician referral is required. The cost is $20 for the patient and $5 for a supporting family member or caregiver who also would like to attend.
The McLeod Diabetes Center offers an extensive range of inpatient and outpatient services including diabetes self-management education, individual and group education classes, nutritional counseling and carbohydrate counting education, and exercise and weight management. The center, staffed by three Certified Diabetes Educators, also offers education in diabetes foot care, insulin self-administration and insulin pump training, training in home glucose monitoring, and stress and time management.
The center also has been recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and the American Diabetes Association. For more information call (843) 777-6000 or visit www.McLeodDiabetes.org online.
