Derrick and Amanda Suggs are anything but the typical family.
The couple has two children of its own before it adopted Amanda's three younger siblings in order to keep them out of foster care. The family lived in a family home near Cane Branch Baptist Church in the Allsbrook community, but now it won't have to keep cramped quarters anymore.
On Monday, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and its roving circus of television producers, designers, contractors announced it would build the Suggs a brand new home on the family property.
"We still can't really wrap our heads around this," said Amanda Suggs on Monday afternoon. "It's really amazing," she said.
The Suggs family will be whisked away to a vacation for a week while local volunteers, contractors, and tradespeople, working under the supervision of Sterling Homes and the ABC TV crew, will build a brand-new home.
Derrick works with Horry County Police, and some of his fellow officers nominated him for the new home.
"It's a wonderful place to work. They're great to me," said Derrick. "I really appreciate them and everything they've done for us," he said.
One of the children the couple adopted is 17-year-old Jacob Carter. He said with a new home, his family will be more comfortable and not have as much to worry about.
"It will be just more comfortable to bring people over to hang out and it's just going to give us a safer environment to live and make us happier," said Carter.
Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon is helping the "Extreme" team this week with the project. He was on-hand Monday to help with the walk-through and to drive the family away in a limousine.
