HEMINGWAY—Neighbors of a Georgetown County woman whose home caught fire Jan 4 are already taking steps to help their fellow resident get back on her feet.
Only a few hours after the Ports Hill Road home of Shelia Edwards and her son, Tyler, burned Monday, nearby residents met at the Folly Grove Community Center and decided to set up a relief fund at a Hemingway bank to raise financial assistance for the two.
Members of the group said they are planning an additional fundraiser next month.
Ed Taczala, and his wife Judy, of Hemingway were among those to get involved in the effort. According to Ed, another neighbor who works at a Williamsburg First National Bank in Hemingway suggested setting up the relief fund to help the Edwards family.
Other neighbors said helping Edwards and her son was just seemed like the right thing to do.
“She’s been in the community for years,” Cheryl Batten, who lives nearby and is also involved with the fund-raising, said. “She had no insurance and we just felt like something needed to be done.”
The group said those wanting to make a contribution to Shelia and Tyler Edwards can send donations to “The Shelia Edwards Relief Fund,” Williamsburg First National Bank, P.O. Box 1300, Hemingway, SC, 29554.
A chicken pileau dinner fundraiser will be held at the Folly Grove Community Center Feb 5, neighbors said.
Taczala said the group plans on distributing fliers closer to the event with more information.
Edwards, who neighbors said her and her son were now staying with a relative, could not be reached for comment.
