We at Williamsburg Technical College realize the importance math proficiency plays in the overall success of a student, so we are particularly honored when the brightest and best from our area high schools choose to hone their skills on our campus. Such was the case in early February when four area high schools — Carvers Bay, Hemingway, Johnsonville and Williamsburg Academy — entered the 12th annual math contest at WTC and proved themselves worthy opponents to one another.
Of course the high school teams are integral to the success of such an event, but it is certain that the math contest would have never happened were it not for the generosity of area businesses and organizations that helped sponsor the event. They obviously also realize the importance of mathematical excellence, given their willingness to help in these tough economic times. Our heart-felt thanks go to the following math contest sponsors: FTC, Bi-Lo, Wal-Mart, Williamsburg First National Bank, The Exchange Bank of South Carolina, the Bank of Greeleyville, Kingstree Federal Savings and Loan, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Progress Energy, Santee Electric Cooperative Incorporated, Pizza Hut, State Farm Insurance of Kingstree, the Williamsburg County Professional Women’s Organization, Palmetto Synthetics, and Texas Instruments.
We send congratulations to Williamsburg Academy senior Tripp Connolly, the overall individual first place winner, and to the members of the Johnsonville High School overall winning team: seniors Ross Foshee, Zach Chandler, and Rachel Gaster and juniors Ashlyn Cribb and Nick Sanders. Foshee was top individual scorer for his team, and Cribb and Sanders placed fifth and fourth respectively in the overall individual competition.
Kudos also go to second place team winners from Carvers Bay High School: seniors Qushaun Gibson, Tervian Lovelace and Karra McCray along with juniors Macey Owens and Kyle Dean and to Qushaun who also won individual winner for his team and was also named third place winner in the overall individual competition.
We are proud that Williamsburg Academy took the third place slot with the help of seniors Tripp Connolly (top individual score for his team and first place winner for the overall competition), Anna Caroline Chinnes, and Ricky Wan and juniors Anne Miller Adams and Leanne McFadden.
We also send a pat on the back for a job well done to Hemingway High School’s top individual scorer, senior Julietta Dickson, who participated with fellow senior team members Anindita Chokrararty and Henry Brewington and juniors Rashad Smalls and Chris Patel.
Last but certainly not least, I wish to thank Willie Bryant, WTC’s math instructor and contest organizer, for his enthusiasm and hard work. He was helped by many across campus who served food, administered and scored tests, prepared packets and gifts for the participants, helped with registration, and helped in a variety of other ways.
The WTC math contest is a great annual event and we certainly hope that more area high school math teams will see the benefit of participating in the years to come.
