NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- One person is in custody, one person died, and two were transported to a hospital after a car was heading the wrong way on a North Myrtle Beach roadearly Tuesday morning.

According to city spokesperson Nicole Aiello, three cars were involved in the accident just after 3:00 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 and S.C. Highway 9.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Chris Burroughs identifies the victim as Mitchell White, 28, of Loris. She said an autopsy Tuesday showed White died of multiple trauma as a result of the wreck. He was a passenger in the car that was going the wrong direction and was not wearing a seatbelt, according to investigators.

Investigators believe one car was driving south in the northbound lane of Highway 17, and struck another vehicle almost head-on, and then glanced off another vehicle.

Officials with the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department arrested and charged Michael A. Butler, 30, from Loris, S.C., with
felony DUI.

A judge set Butler's bond at $25,000.

Two other people involved in the wreck were transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, according to Aiello.

Officials closed northbound Highway 17 for a few hours while investigators worked the scene. Traffic flow was restored around 6:00 a.m.
