CONWAY, S.C. A Conway judge turned down the request Tuesday for a new trial for 28-year-old Edwin Cornelius of Aynor.

Cornelius pleaded guilty in 2008 to killing 18-year-old Natalia Holmes outside Carolina Forest High School in Myrtle Beach.

Circuit Judge Benjamin Culbertson rejected Cornelius' contention that he did not get adequate legal representation.

He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Original defense attorney Ralph Wilson says he and Cornelius had rejected a plea agreement for a 40 year prison term, in hopes of getting a 30-year sentence.

Instead, Cornelius received the maximum sentence.
