JOHNSONVILLE—Issues discussed at the Jan. 2 meeting of the Johnsonville City Council included:
- Meeting began at 6:30p.m.
- Robert M. Fotsch, CEO of Wellman Plastics Recycling LLC addressed members of council on the plants operations and immediate plans for the future (See “Wellman moving forward” on ___)
- A citizen voiced concerns during public forum on beautification projects he said focused exclusively on Main Street while ignoring other areas within the city, saying “The backstreets look like hog pens.” The citizen suggested the council look into making various civic improvements on the back streets, including sidewalks and other safety issues.
- City administrator Scott Tanner addressed several issues in his city administrator report, including an update on the now demolished city pool. Tanner said. More grating of the site was to be scheduled.
- Tanner said the possible annexation of Hope Road area continuing into the city limits was still being discussed with interest from the residents there continuing. He also said should that annexation go through, the next project could be the annexation of the Hickory Hill area and the roughly 85 residents there. A public meeting was in the works for the residents of the Hope Road area and would be announced at a later date.
- A clerical error has the asking Johnsonville for additional information. According to City Administrator Scott Tanner, proper approval was not given by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History when the city’s “Streetscapes” projects were underway several years ago. A $120,000 reimbursement is at stake, but Tanner said department officials at the DHA don’t foresee a problem. Updates would be given later on.
- Councilmember Diane Marsh reported on a conference she attended at Florence Darlington Technical College and discussed the possibility of acquiring grant moneys to establish a juvenile justice program in Johnsonville. More information was being obtained on the matter.
- Councilman Brad Richardson announced the Pee Dee Coalition would be holding meetings soon.
- Meeting adjourned shortly after 8:00p.m.
