CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - With the cruise industry growing in South Carolina, a state agency has unveiled an ambitious plan to create a new cruise terminal and open additional space at a coastal port to the public.
Under a plan revealed Tuesday, the State Ports Authority would renovate an existing building on Charleston's historic waterfront for a new terminal to replace the agency's aging cruise facility.
The new terminal would have plenty of space for parking and end the traffic snarls that sometimes occur when ships call.
Authority chairman and CEO Jim Newsome says he hopes the new terminal can be open in two years or so.
Carnival Cruise Lines this spring will permanently base its 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy in Charleston. There will be 67 cruise calls in the city this year.
