FLORENCE—Novelist Ron Rash will discuss and read from his work, primarily his most recent novel “Serena,” Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Cauthen Educational Media Center’s Lowrimore Auditorium at Francis Marion University.

Rash’s visit to FMU is sponsored by the Hunter Chair in English Literature, which was established in 1991 as a memorial to Jones Thomas and Carolyn Stroman Hunter. The reading is free and open to the public. Rash will also be speaking from 4 to 5:30 p.m. the same day in the Stukes Meeting Room of the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation Library.

Set in 1929, “Serena” tells the story of newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton who come from Boston to the North Carolina mountains to create a timber empire. Rash’s lecture will focus on how he merged the history of Appalachia with the fiction of his novel. This work was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, the largest peer-juried prize for fiction in the United States.

Rash is a noted Appalachian writer who currently serves as the Parris Distinguished Professor in Appalachian Cultural Studies at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. He also is the author of the novels “One Foot in Eden,” winner of the Novello Literary Award and the Appalachian Book of the Year award; “Saints at the River,” winner of Weatherford Award for Best Novel of 2004 and Southern Book Critics Circle Novel of the Year for 2005; and “The World Made Straight.”

For more information, contact Jon Tuttle in FMU’s Department of English at (843) 661-1521.
