CHERAW -- Atticus Simpson of Cheraw recently earned the graduate certificate in higher education leadership from the University of South Carolina.
The certificate is an academic credential approved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, and sponsored by the South Carolina Technical College System to advance the knowledge and competencies of professionals in the South Carolina technical college sector.
The certificate is a two-year (six-semester) program which requires participants to take classes in higher education finance, assessment, teaching, legal affairs and leadership. Simpson was selected by Northeastern Technical College administrators to participate in the program and started taking classes in January 2008.
He received his certificate on Dec. 4 in Columbia where he was selected by classmates to serve as a speaker during the graduation ceremony. Five other employees at NETC have completed the program including Cathy Pelfrey of Cheraw, Melisa Johnson of Chesterfield, Leron Peterkin of Bennettsville, Diane Dyches of Patrick, and Dr. Forest Mahan of Cheraw.
Simpson is the director of institutional advancement at the college where he has worked since June 2005.
