Milken Building progress discussed

KINGSTREE -- Hilton McGill, Executive Director of the Williamsburg County Development Board, addressed progress regarding the Miliken Building in Kingstree. McGill said a deal was arranged to purchase the structure. “We own the building now, for better or worse,” McGill said during the Feb 1. meeting of the Williamsburg County Council. The council approved $11,000 be committed for site renovation and clean up.

Councilman Franklin Fulmore proposed that Sunday Feb. 21 be declared a “day of prayer” in Williamsburg County for those suffering from the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The date coincides with the Haiti relief fundraiser announced earlier in the meeting by Supervisor Stanley S. Pasley. The supervisor said the county sponsored fundraiser would be held Feb. 19 and 22, from 8am-5pm in the council chambers at the county complex both days. All donations will be tax deductible, Pasley said, and made through Red Cross.

The Feb. 16 meeting of the county council was canceled and moved to March 1, to allow more time to gather information for solid waste disposal. The council made a commitment at a meeting earlier this year to present a report on options for waste disposal.

Councilman Harry L. Darby was not present at the Feb. 1 meeting, due to a death in his family. Council members were asked to keep Darby and his family in their prayers.
