MARION -- The City of Marion presented the Pee Dee American Red Cross with a check for $13,000 for Haiti relief efforts Tuesday morning.

Local churches, businesses, restaurants, schools and the police department collected donations as a part of the two week citywide effort.

Executive Director of the Pee Dee American Red Cross Linda Boone-Smith said monetary donations are the best way to help Haiti relief efforts because food can spoil and they don’t have the space to sort and send those items.

“That way they have to money to buy what they need right away. A prime example of that is money so they can buy generators and medication,” Boone-Smith said.

All funds raised will go directly to Haiti. The Pee Dee American Red Cross writes a check every two weeks for funds raised and sends it directly to Haiti.
