ANDREWS – An elderly man died and his older brother was hospitalized following a boating incident Monday on the Black River.

Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight identified the victim as Nathan Alford, 77.

Alford and his 88-year-old brother, whose ID was not immediately available, were traveling up the Black River in a 15-foot High Tide when “something happened” and the brother was knocked out, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources spokesman Lt. Robert McCullough said.

When the older brother regained consciousness he saw Alford in the water.

The brothers returned to Red’s Landing where someone called 911, McCullough said.

An autopsy is planned at MUSC, McKnight said.

DNR officers are still in the Andrews area conducting their investigation, McCullough said.

The older brother is hospitalized for a head injury in Georgetown, McCullough said.
