On Feb. 3, I had the privilege of chaperoning Saint Anthony Catholic School elementary and middle school students to the annual SCISA (South Carolina Independent School Association) Literary Meet, graciously and professionally hosted by the Holly Hill Academy in Holly Hill.
The meet was well attended with 38 schools across the state participating in several types of competitions including debate, essay writing, oral interpretation (humorous and dramatic), storytelling, extemporaneous speaking and one-act plays. At the awards ceremony, attended by more than 700 people, I was very pleased to see how well the SCISA schools of Florence are educating their youth.
Saint Anthony did well in the middle school debate tournament, storytelling and oral interpretation. The Kings Academy and Florence Christian School did very well, including the one-act play category. I found myself saying, “Florence Rocks!!!” during the awards ceremony.
With so many schools in attendance, the main gathering area was quite crowded, but the children were well behaved, enthusiastic, and polite and that was a joy to experience.
Everyone, students as well as their teachers, obviously worked hard to prepare for this meet. Florence should be proud of its SCISA students! They are the next generation of leaders, and with the high caliber performance displayed yesterday I, for one, have great hope for the future.
