FLORENCE -- A gas leak may be responsible for a blaze that engulfed a Florence home Monday evening. It happened just after 7p.m. at a home at 317 Covington St. which is off West Palmetto Street.

The residence is split into several rental properties, but no one was in any part of the home during the fire, Florence Fire Marshal Ken Carr said.

About 16 firefighters responded and had the fire under control in about 30 minutes, he said.

Firefighters shut down parts of West Palmetto while fighting the fire, but soon opened the street after an alternative water source was found.

It is unclear what started the blaze, but a strong smell of gas was detected around the home, he said.

Utility workers checked other homes in the area in an effort to discover the source of the suspected leak.
