FLORENCE -- A Florence woman who police say posed as a veterans affairs case worker so she could obtain more than $20,000 from a veteran’s relief aid group was arrested Monday.
Surethia McCoy McFadden, 36, of 1601 Pickford Lane is charged with obtaining property under false pretenses value $5,000 or more, Florence County Detention Center bookings reports show.
Police said the suspect applied for a grant from a veteran’s relief aid group out of Dallas in May of 2008.
In order to be considered for the grant the agency requires applicants to submit accurate information about the income of everyone in their household.
The suspect applied for the grant but didn’t tell the agency her husband was already receiving monies because he was a veteran , Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said.
She even posed an a veterans affairs worker several times over a two-year period and called the agency in an effort to get the money he said.
The suspect was eventually able to get $22,700 from the agency by giving them false information.
She was released Monday from the Florence County jail after posting bond.
