TOKYO - Brake problems involving two Toyota models are prompting the Japanese automaker to recall another 437,000 cars.
Most of the recalls announced today involve Priuses, following complaints about a delay when the brakes are pressed in cold conditions and on some bumpy roads. About 7,300 four-cylinder Camry
sedans produced early in the 2010 model year are also being recalled because of a possible brake fluid leak.
Toyota says it first received a report of Prius braking problems in August in Japan, but its investigation found no abnormality. After receiving a similar report from the U.S. in October, Toyota determined there was a glitch in the antilock brake system software. It decided to make a change to its production line to address the problem, but moved to a recall after receiving more complaints.
The company says the Prius problem can be fixed in 40 minutes with new software that oversees the controls of the antilock brakes.
The latest announcement brings the total number of Toytas being recalled to 8.5 million, including those recalled last month because of problems with gas pedals.
