The Friends and Alumni Association of Palmetto High School celebrated its annual “Black Achievement Awards Banquet” on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Mullins High School Cafeteria.
The annual event featured entertainment from local performers, including Jim Neal’s (class of 1960) O’ My Lardy Productions, Deacon Albert Graves, gospel group Devine Purpose, Cierra Reaves and dancer Latoria Wheeler.
The mistress of ceremony for the dinner and awards ceremony was WPDE TV 15 reporter Tonya Brown. Also leading the ceremony was alumna Mollie Bethea Floyd.
The alumni association organized by graduates of Palmetto High School, including Marion County Councilman Milton Troy II, put together several activities during the course of the year, raising money for college scholarships. Graduates from Palmetto High School also gather at Smith Haven Park in Mullins for a July 4th celebration with family and friends along with a fundraiser. This year will mark the 50th reunion for the class of 1960.
Receiving awards for this year are Palmetto Scholars and athletes from Mullins High School.
Palmetto Scholars are Cherelle Smith and Keyan W. Rogers.
Palmetto athletes are Wayne Barron, Brandon Mason, George Page, Jim Reaves, Cedric Timmons, Brea’ Williams and Brea’ Roberts.
The Friends and Alumni Association of Palmetto High School also presented Marion Star & Enterprise Editor Naeem Mcfadden with the Palmetto Pioneer Award for being the first African American male to hold the position.
Giving everyone involved a round of applause; president and founder of the organization Troy thanked Billy Hunter for coordinating transportation for senior citizens and donating tickets. Troy also thanked Troy’s Funeral Home Inc. for support and being the site of the associations meetings held the first Monday of each month. The organization was established in 1984.
“I thought it was fantastic, the best one yet,” Troy said of the event. “It gives us the opportunity to present honors to our deserving youth and allows people young and old to show their talent,” he said.
