Glynn F. Willis announced Saturday he will run for the at-large seat on Florence City Council that Bill Bradham has held for nearly 13 years.

Bradham recently announced he won’t seek another term in office.

Willis will run in the Republican primary in June. He is the first person to announce his intentions to run for the seat, and Bradham has endorsed him.

“Glynn Willis has been an invaluable asset to Florence City Council because of his knowledge and understanding of how the city functions and his ability to work within the community,” Bradham said. “Glynn has excelled in working with citizens throughout Florence in finding solutions for difficult issues.”

Willis said he has always been involved in the community and hopes to continue his work on city council.

“Being on Florence City Council will allow me the opportunity to work with citizens throughout the city to improve their quality of life and to work with council to move Florence forward in a united manner,” he said.

If elected, Willis said, he will make public safety a priority.

“I want to make sure all citizens feel safe in their homes and neighborhoods,” he said. “And I want to make sure that our law enforcement officers have the tools and equipment they need to do their jobs.”

Willis has served on both the city of Florence Planning Commission and the Florence County/Municipal Planning Commission. He serves as chairman of the Florence Planning Commission.

Willis said he is an advocate for smart growth and wants to see Florence continue to grow but not at its own expense.

“If given the opportunity to serve the people of Florence on city council, I will study each issue that comes before council thoroughly to understand all aspects of the matter and I will vote to do what is in the best interest of the entire community,” he said. “I want to ensure that as we develop Florence, we don’t lose the quality of life we have here. We don’t ever want to lose those special qualities and things that make Florence what it is.”

Willis is a graduate of Wingate University and Coker College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. A former law enforcement officer, Willis serves as real estate manager at Adams Outdoor Advertising in Florence.

Throughout his career, Willis has worked with many local, nonprofit organizations and served as a board member for many groups including Pee Dee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Pee Dee Boys and Girls Clubs, American Red Cross, Florence County Disabilities Foundation and Keep Florence Beautiful. In 2009, Willis was voted Best Volunteer of the Pee Dee by Morning News readers.

“That was quite an honor for me,” Willis said. “It is something I will always be extremely proud of.”

Willis and his wife Sandra have two children, Lauren and Glynn Jr., and are members of Central United Methodist Church.
