WASHINGTON, D.C. — In February, the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) is holding free information sessions on its Teach & Inspire Scholarship Program throughout the state of South Carolina. On Saturday, it will be at Florence-Darlington Technical College (main campus), Room 109. The event is scheduled at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. as well as noon and 1 p.m.
Interested individuals can find more information, register for events and find an online application at www.abcte.org/inspire or by calling 877-669-2228. Online information also will be held throughout the month and can be accessed through the organization’s Web site.
Funded by a U.S. Department of Education Transition to Teaching grant, the scholarship program is designed to recruit and prepare highly qualified individuals to teach in high-need South Carolina schools in the subjects of math, science and English.
Teach & Inspire provides accepted participants with a full scholarship and materials needed to become certified teachers in South Carolina through the ABCTE program. Once ABCTE certification is obtained, candidates are eligible for an additional $1,000 stipend for completing classroom observations. Participants must make a three-year commitment to teach their subject in a high-need South Carolina school. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, have the ability to work independently and possess a strong desire to make a positive impact on South Carolina students.
“We’re looking for highly motivated individuals with a bachelor’s degree, who are excited about making a difference in high-need schools and subjects throughout the state. Though we have found many qualified and passionate individuals to join our program, each time we hold recruitment sessions we have scholarship dollars that go unused because we still cannot find enough great candidates,” explains Teach & Inspire Scholarship Program Manager Najla Husseini. “I encourage any aspiring teacher to come to our free events to learn more about how they can earn a scholarship to make a difference for South Carolina’s students.”
