Coker College names first Poet Laurete
Nationally acclaimed poet and 1994 Coker College graduate Terrance Hayes has been named the first Poet Laureate of Coker College.

As Coker’s official poet, Hayes will dedicate an original poem to the college and occasionally visit campus to guest-teach and give readings. By establishing the honorary position, which is a lifetime appointment, Coker hopes to raise awareness of the importance of poetry and creative writing among the campus community and the community at large.

“I was nurtured in countless ways by many people at Coker,” Hayes said. “The lessons I learned continue to guide me as a teacher, writer and citizen. This was an honor that I happily and proudly accepted.”

Hayes’ most recent poetry collection, Wind in a Box (Penguin 2006), was named one of the Best 100 Books of 2006 by Publishers Weekly. Poems in Lighthead, Hayes’ collection to be published by Penguin in 2010, have appeared in journals such as The American Poetry Review, Poetry, and The New Yorker. He has also been profiled on The News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS.

Hayes, Professor of Creative Writing at Carnegie Mellon University, lives in Pittsburgh. He is the Coal Royalty Chairholder in Creative Writing at The University of Alabama. A native of Columbia who attended Spring Valley High School, Hayes was also presented with the Outstanding Young Alumni Award in 2001 at Coker College.

Research colloquium to be held Saturday
On Saturday, parents, mentors and friends will gather in Hartsville from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics’ (GSSM) 21st Annual Research Colloquium to watch and listen as more than 70 students present scientific research findings from their summer 2009 internships.

The colloquium is the culmination of the school's Summer Program for Research Interns, a unique, hands-on educational initiative that matches GSSM rising seniors with scientist mentors. During the internship, students conduct research on a college graduate level in fields in which they have a specific interest such as cancer research, biomedical experiments or computer science.

"The most effective way for students to learn science is by engaging them in scientific inquiry," said Randy La Cross, GSSM Vice President of Outreach and Research. "Through this experience, and their presentations at Colloquium, they learn how to ask scientific questions and communicate the results of their findings."
