McBEE – The cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle are diet and exercise. The grand opening of an on-site fitness center on Jan. 20 is one component of the A.O. Smith Water Company’s Healthy by Choice wellness program to assist employees in adopting a healthy lifestyle.
“It is exciting to have an A.O. Smith plant pursue a facility such as this,” Lori Menzel, A.O. Smith wellness coordinator, said. “We see wellness as not just a phase. We would like to see it become part of the A.O. Smith culture.”
Employees at the grand opening ceremony watched as Christ Count, human resource manager, cut the ribbon to the 1,500-square-foot center. The event included door prizes, refreshments and a tour of the workout area.
“This center is another example of how aggressively and positively everyone in McBee is addressing employee wellness risks and the issue of high health care costs,” Vice President of Global Human Resources Thomas J. Olander said.
An outside vendor will operate the center, and employees will be able to access it 24-7. Equipment includes treadmills, elliptical machines and various stacked weight machines. During the first few months of operation, a professional trainer will be available in the fitness center to give dietary and fitness advice to employees.
The company also began offering healthier menu items at its cafeteria such as turkey burgers, grilled and baked foods, fruit cups and leaner ground beef. A rewards program, the Tangerine weight loss program, offers employees monetary rewards for losing weight and help from a certified health coach.
The goal of McBee’s wellness program is to expose employees to healthy lifestyle choices for their benefit, the benefit of their families and A.O. Smith. The McBee facility employs approximately 350 people and manufactures commercial water heaters and high efficiency boilers.
