February is Black History Month, and in recognition, Florence School District 1 will hold a districtwide celebration with nationally known performing artists as guests. The program, held for seventh-grade students from Sneed Middle, Southside Middle, and Williams Middle, embraces the theme, "Using Freedom to Attain Success."
Featured performers for the event are members of Orisirisi, one of the world’s most preeminent performing arts companies. Created in 1986 with the expressed purpose of sharing African life and culture, the performers, Don and Tutu Harrell, as they are known worldwide, use varied artistic forms to impart folk-knowledge and experiences to and for their audiences.
The program will be held on Thursday, Feb.11, in the Wilson High School Gymnasium, beginning at 10 a.m. The Sneed Middle School Jazz Band, Wilson High School JROTC, and Wilson High School Chorus will all be featured on the program.
In keeping with the theme, seventh-grade students have submitted essays and school winners have been selected from each of the three middle schools. Winners who will be recognized at the event include: Grant Billings of Sneed Middle, the son of Mr. Joel and Mrs. Lindsey Billings, Jenalee Levesque, English/Language Arts teacher; Minnie Dosh of Southside Middle, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Dosh, Virginia Grant, English/Language Arts Teacher; and Daniel Beasley of Williams Middle, the son of Mr. Wes and Julia Beasley, Susan Rae, English/Language Arts teacher.
