Vital Aging will be hosting its 3rd Annual " Ms. Williamsburg Senior" Pageant Saturday, September 25, according to a release issued by the organization earlier this week. “This event will help support the Foster Grandparent Program in meeting it's 10 percent match on the federal grant, as well as help us to continue our mission of ‘Sharing today, to Shape Tomorrow" the release said.
Vital Aging of Williamsburg County, Inc. provides a variety of services to the seniors of Williamsburg County, including home delivered meals to frail homebound seniors, wellness centers for active seniors and the Foster Grandparent Program, which “connects youthful minds of tomorrow with the aging wisdom of yesterday,” the release said.
The Foster Grandparent Program provides a unique connection between generations, enabling low-income seniors 55 and over to remain active as they provide tutoring and mentoring to the students of Williamsburg County, according to the release.
The Foster Grandparent Program currently has thirty-eight senior volunteers, the release said, as well as 11 volunteer stations. Approximately 220 exceptional or special needs students are served each year. Last year the senior volunteers served alone a total of 27,366 hours, the release said, sharing knowledge and life experience with tutees.
“They should be considered the most precious asset in today's society,” the release said.
