FLORENCE COUNTY - A board meeting never sounded like so much fun.
Several board members from the Southeastern Bluegrass Association got together for a jam session Tuesday morning at president Ernie McCormick's house near Quinby, as they prepare for a big show Saturday night at Lynches River County Park near Coward.
"There's a lot of jamming that goes on, a lot of fellowship," said McCormick. "It's just infectious music. It gets in your blood."
McCormick said SBGA members began playing once a month for the public at the park in 1991, and also formed the non-profit to help preserve traditional bluegrass music.
On the program for Saturday's big show, in addition to SEBGA is Bill Wells and Blue Ridge Mountain Grass. The activities start at 3:00 p.m. and admission is $10 for adults 12 and older. The first 200 guests will get chicken bog.
Board members hope to attract new players or even those who've never tried to play bluegrass before.
"When you get the opportunity to sit in with a group, it's very welcoming," said Craig Cribb, who plays bass and acoustic guitar. "Beginners just learn to play rhythm or strum along, and, as they're able to add to the group, it just gets better."
