The summer will soon be in the rear view mirror and children in the area are into the third week of the new school year. Getting the year off to a great start takes a collaborative effort from school officials, staff members and parents. So far the trip back to school has been a blast, thanks to caring individuals and partnerships that are providing fun, entertainment and learning opportunities for the youth in Marion County.
On July 24, Empowerment Women Magazine helped to organize a back-to-school rally for children of all ages at the Smith Haven Park. The summer fest drew a modest crowd of 60 people, however, the fundraising efforts of local vendors donated to Marion School District Two to help sponsor back-to-school initiatives.
Live entertainment, arts and crafts along with a giant water slide were just a few highlights of the day.
Following up on the rally was the annual Youth Empowerment Day in the City of Marion on Aug. 21. Marion County Karate Studios does a terrific job organizing the event, which featured a youth championship martial arts tournament and exhibition.
In just the third year of the event, organizer Fred Gause said the empowerment day is about getting the youth excited about education and learning leading up to the new school year.
Gause has been a valuable contributor in the community, volunteering his time teaching self-defense classes and working with children in an after school arts program and daycare group. The event held at C.D. Joyner Auditorium has become a regional exhibition, where some of the most talented martial artists from Dillon, Mullins and Fayetteville, N.C. showcased their skills. Marion County Chief Magistrate Judge Darryl Burns served as guest speaker.
Activities such as these are vital in the community, serving as not only a positive influence for the youth, but also providing an outlet for fun and creativity along with good family entertainment. There is more to come.
On Oct. 16 at the C.D. Joyner Auditorium, Rev. Marvin Hemingway will be leading the way in organizing the annual Marion County Youth Day that will feature a number of special guests and musical performances.
