All Larry Combs has to do to reassure water customers in Maxton that he’s doing his job is to show him the plaque the town recently won, naming it home of North Carolina’s best water supply.
"I’ve always told the citizens: If I don’t drink the water, I don’t want you to drink it," said Combs, who has worked for the town for about seven years.
Recently, the North Carolina Rural Water Association used a taste test to determine Maxton’s sample was the best-tasting and most aesthetically pleasing water in the state.
When Combs first started as water superintendent, not many people were drinking the water. By his own estimation, 85 percent of Maxton residents were buying bottled water. Now, since he’s made some major improvements in both filtration, delivery and maintenance, Combs said the tables have turned: more people are going with the town’s water than not.
"We’ve got it down to a science," said Combs. "I think the most important thing we do is pay attention to detail," he said.
Town leaders are also paying attention to ways to market the town as a whole by marketing the award-winning water.
"Well, we have the product," said Mayor Gladys Dean. "Why not flaunt it?"
In addition to pursuing that as an opportunity for bringing in revenue, Combs said the town will vie for the title of best water in the nation at a competition coming up in February.
