CONWAY - Horry County Fire Rescue was recently awarded a Bullard T-4 Max Thermal Imaging Camera, valued at more than $10,000 for winning a Safety Video Contest, Everyone Goes Home® sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and Fireman's Fund Insurance.
This highly-competitive contest was open to fire departments all over the United States, in which they were to create and submit a video highlighting the importance of at least one of the 16 Life Safety Initiatives.
The video submitted by Horry County Fire Rescue demonstrated how a fitness program can be incorporated by utilizing equipment used every day by firefighters, at no cost to the department.
The video promoted the following initiatives:
- Life Safety Initiative #2 - Enhance the personal and organizational accountability for health and safety throughout the fire service.
- Life Safety Initiative #6 - Develop and implement national medical and physical fitness standards that are equally applicable to all firefighters, based on the duties they are expected to perform.
“Horry County Fire Rescue takes the physical fitness aspect for our employees very seriously,” stated Garry Alderman, fire chief at Horry County Fire Rescue. “We want to make certain that our men and women out in the field are in the best physical health as possible. By encouraging this, it not only makes them stronger in their work-related tasks, but also ensures better quality of life.”
Every year, nearly 100 firefighters lose their lives in the line of duty.
The 16 Firefighter Life Initiatives were developed by the American fire service in 2004 as a move toward reducing preventable firefighter line-of-duty deaths and injuries.
In 2005, the Everyone Goes Home® program was developed to ensure that firefighters have the tools they need to reduce firefighter line-of-duty deaths and injuries and promote a culture of safety.
