CONWAY – Police released more details Wednesday afternoon concerning a deadly wreck from Tuesday morning.
In the police report, an Horry County police officer said he first noticed a Mitsubishi car at the A and M Mobile Home Park in the area of Highway 814 near the Forestbrook area, about 11:10 a.m..
The officer said the vehicle left the park and stopped at a stop sign on Highway 814, where the driver got out of the car. The report states the driver went to the trunk, but returned to the car once he noticed the police car. The officer said the trunk remained slightly open and he began following the suspect.
He reported the driver failed to use a signal while turning into the Kangaroo gas station at the corner of Forestbrook Road and Dick Pond Road. The officer then flashed his blue lights and siren, attempting to conduct an ordinary traffic stop, but the driver did not stop.
Police say the driver led them on a chase for about one minute, and the car was at one point driving in the wrong lane of McCormick Road. That’s where the car collided head-on with a black SUV, according to the report.
The officer recalled, “I saw the rear end of the car go airborne and to the left landing in the grass close to the ditch on the opposite side.”
He then called emergency responders to the scene.
The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital, and the car’s driver suffered minor injuries. The car’s passenger, Lucero Sanchez Martinez, died at Conway Medical Center after the accident.
No other details are known about the suspect at this time.
