JOHNSONVILLE— Jamison Powell, a five-year-old Johnsonville youth, flew with members of his family to Washington, D.C. this morning to start receive new chemotherapy and radiation treatments diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

Jamision was accompanied to Washington by his mother, Lindsay Powell, and maternal grandparents, Roy and Belinda Roberts.

Doctor’s discovered a malignant brain tumor in five-year-old last week when his family sought medical attention after the youth had difficulty maintaining his balance while at a youth baseball game.

The plane was piloted by Ervin Lambert, owner of L & L Contractors in Andrews, who volunteered to fly the family free-of-charge to Washington, D.C. on his two engine Piper Cub from Hemingway-Stuckey Airport, adding to the already generous contributions from local friends and family.

In addition to the flight, a another donor from Darlington has extended the family the use of her Washington, DC condo for the next 2 months while Jamison undergoes new chemotherapy treatment at a nearby hospital, the family said.

The donor contacted the family after reading about Jamison's situation in The Morning News last week.

Family members said oncologists at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia told the family Jamison needed to start receiving treatment for the tumor immediately. Jamison is expected to reviece treatment for 6-8 weeks.

Several fundraisers have been planned by citizens within the community to help raise funds for the Powell family, the first a fundraiser selling Bar-B-Que chicken dinners at the Johnsonville community center on South Hampton Avenue April 16 from 11:30a.m.-2p.m.

Wade Nettles and Jonz Stuckey, who coach the youth baseball team Jamison plays for, have been heavily involved in organizing the April 16 fundraiser as well as facilitating other donations to the family. Nettles said tickets would be on sale throughout the community this week, $6 for dinner and $10 for raffle tickets. Nettles said the group would be raffling off a rifle as an additional fundraiser.

Nettles also said a trust fund had been set up for Jamison Powell at The Citizens Bank on Georgetown Highway in Johnsonville. Anyone can make a donation there by simply inquiring about the Jamison Powell trust fund, he said.

Several local residents have already volunteered to cook at the April 16 event, Nettles said, but more volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve the food. He mentioned specifically that ladies were needed to bake pound cakes for the event.

Anyone wishing to learn more about the fundraiser or to purchase tickets can do so by calling Wade Nettles at 843- 933-5290. Nettles said dinners would be delivered to local businesses.
