MYRTLE BEACH - The idea may have been for various Grand Strand media outlets to lend personalities to build shelters for Haitian earthquake victims, but volunteers stole the show, and finished work early on Wednesday.
Dozens of volunteers--some of them who took off work, school, and even vacations--showed up to hammer, saw, and carry walls that will go straight to Miami, and then to Port-Au-Prince, as part of the program that provides wooden shelters for people who lost everything in the January earthquake.
Brian Fulton is on vacation from Philadelphia, and he came out Thursday to lend a hand.
"I mean, for a little bit of money, what you're giving to the Haitians, a place to live--it means the world to them," he said.
Ed Jackson, coordinator for Shelter Haiti, says the workers built enough walls to put 18 houses together.
"We're going to load up the 18, and hopefully get that truck out of her, headed to Miami," he said.
