DARLINGTON — A former Darlington police officer has been arrested after being accused of stealing money from a man he arrested, according to a State Law Enforcement Division press release.
Farrell A. Bethea, 23, of 504 S.C. 381 South, McColl, is charged with petit larceny and misconduct in office. He was booked at the Darlington County Detention Center on Thursday and released, but bond information wasn’t available.
According to SLED arrest warrants, the officer took $460 from the wallet of Willie Bethea Jr. while conducting a driving under the influence arrest Feb. 14. The Betheas are not related.
The Darlington Police Department learned about the alleged crime and requested that SLED investigate, according to the release.
“He’s no longer with the police department,” Darlington Police Chief Jay Cox said Thursday of the officer.
Cox said Farrell Bethea left the department Thursday, but declined to say whether he was terminated or resigned.
Farrell Bethea had been with the police department for about a year and worked as a patrol officer, Cox said.
