After balloons, presents and birthday cake, participants exercised to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Local St. Jude patient Kansas Cassidy turned 5 two days ago and celebrated with the women of Curves of Hartsville on Thursday.
Born and raised in Hartsville, Cassidy was diagnosed with Wilms tumors on her kidneys at age 3. Currently her cancer is in remission.
In 1962, when Danny Thomas founded St. Jude, the survival rate for Cassidy’s type of cancer was only 50 percent. Now, because of the hospital’s research, the survival rate is 90 percent.
The hospital doesn’t turn anyone away due to inability to pay. The daily operating cost is nearly $1.4 million and is primarily covered by public contributions.
Audrey Griggs, owner of Curves of Hartsville, said the event raised at least $500. Curves will continue to accept donations for another week.
“We knew it was an excellent opportunity to do a mission for the community as well as for the kids suffering with cancer,” said Griggs.
Curves has operated in Hartsville since 2001. Griggs took over the business in 2004. She says the location is good with plenty of parking.
Curves will have activities and events in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and sells the Liv breast cancer self-exam kits that magnify spots to make it easier for women to detect lumps.
Curves of Hartsville, 1109 S. Fifth St., is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Info: (843) 332-5255
