Palmetto Street reopens after car accident

A portion of West Palmetto Street in Florence has reopened after a bicyclist and a sport utility vehicle were involved in an crash Wednesday afternoon.

The area at the 1700 block of West Palmetto Street, near Five Points, was closed for about 20 minutes by Florence Police Department and the Florence Fire Department.

An officer said the bicyclist, an 88-year-old man, was traveling west on the sidewalk and turned into traffic where he was struck by the sport utility vehicle, also traveling west. The cyclist suffered a head injury because of the accident, officials said.

The patient was conscious and talking to officers at an area hospital, he added.
